When and where can I experience Cyprus?

Just a quick heads-up:

If you're coming from Germany just for the sun, Cyprus can help. Just keep in mind that there are sunnier destinations that are quicker and cheaper to reach from Germany. You should plan for a 4-hour flight.

The houses and infrastructure are certainly 20 years behind Germany. But Cyprus makes up for a lot, of course with the weather, the beautiful beaches (whether rocky or sandy), the delicious food, and the stunning scenery.

If it gets too hot for you in summer, simply head to the Troodos Mountains and hike through shady forests and beautiful scenery. The numerous privately owned wineries are also an absolute must-visit, even if it's not too hot.

There are definitely plenty of leisure activities available all over the island. Just take a look at GetYourGuide.

Our personal favorites include, for example, the buggy tour, the boat trip and hike through the Avakas Gorge, the Blue Lagoon, Aphrodite's Rock, the Tombs of the Kings, Paphos Harbour, and Paphos Old Town.

Stroll along the coastal promenade, go snorkeling, or simply spend a day relaxing in the sun.

We always explain our different regions in Cyprus in a very simple way.

Starting in the east, Ayia Napa: Beautiful dream beaches and party mile.

Further west towards Larnaca:

A large city that actually offers everything you need to be happy: beaches, nightlife, restaurants...

Next up is Limassol:

Limassol is a modern metropolis that actually offers everything, but doesn't really communicate with us.

Paphos:

We've lived here since 2024. It's a small, cozy town with everything you need. We love the various beaches and the newly created Coastal Walk, where you can walk, jog, cycle, or do whatever you like for miles along the coast. A beach bar appears every few kilometers. There are a lot of retirees here, primarily from the UK. Accordingly, the nightlife is mainly dominated by British pubs.

Further east you'll find the region of Polis. Far from the beaten track and just right if you need some real peace and quiet.

The only thing we love here is that you can rent a 100 hp speedboat without a license and cruise along the beautiful coast.

We mustn't forget Nicosia, the world's only divided city, which is also the capital. It's actually our favorite city. With its numerous street cafes and pedestrian zones, it exudes an indescribably tranquil atmosphere and has a wealth of historical sites. From here, you can easily reach the northern part of the city, and you'll notice the difference immediately. Definitely don't miss it.

But! Unfortunately, Nicosia is not on the coast...

The arrival

From Cologne, it's practically a no-brainer if you're okay with Ryanair and their practices. There are direct flights to Paphos several times a week.

Major airlines fly to Larnaca constantly. If you're planning to party in Ayia Napa anyway, Larnaca is the obvious choice as a hub.

Intercity buses run between the major cities and the airports for a reasonable price.

When should you travel to Cyprus?

A good question, but not so easy to answer.

When we decided to leave Germany, Cyprus immediately came to mind.

We spent our holidays there twice in April and May, and it was a wonderful time. The weather was pleasant, not too hot, and all the local restaurants and shops were open.

The sea was perfect for swimming.

On our second vacation, we actually did a tour of Cyprus to figure out where we wanted to live when we left Germany.

There are so many different ways of living here.

But in the end, we chose Paphos.

A small town with a lot of charm.

We've been living in Paphos since mid-November 2024, and life here is completely different than it was in May when we first experienced it.

It's important to know that many restaurants and shops, especially in the old town, are closed during the winter months from November to early April. Cyprus is generally quieter, but there's still plenty to do.

The weather in winter is quite changeable but still warm, so you don't need heavy clothing.

You can even still go swimming in the sea, at least if you don't need a bath.

After our return from the Asian countries at the beginning of September, we were able to enjoy glorious sunshine and crystal-clear, beautiful water every day.

We would recommend visiting Cyprus between April and early June, or again between mid-September and mid-November. It's not too hot and all the shops and restaurants are open.
