Why Cyprus?

We get asked that a lot. And yes, after careful consideration, we decided to set up our new base camp there, from where we'll begin our exploration of the world.
So why Cyprus? Well, first and foremost, we wanted more sunshine than we had in Germany. For the last six months, we've practically never seen the sun. It really gets you down. We don't want that anymore, period.

Furthermore, Cyprus is a very beautiful and charming island with something for everyone: In the most extreme case, I can ski in the Troodos Mountains in the morning and relax on the beach or snorkel in the afternoon. If I want, I can spend the morning shopping in a mall in a big city like Limassol and then unwind in the afternoon on the terrace of a cozy taverna in a dreamy fishing village.
Last but not least, the Mediterranean, almost Greek-style cuisine is one of our favorites. I'm just saying, meze, mmmh...

The tax structure is also not to be underestimated. In any case, we feel much better treated and valued here than in Germany, where we feel like we have to pay double or triple taxes on every euro we earn.
Of course, there are many other locations with just as many hours of sunshine, even more beautiful scenery, equally delicious food, and some truly amazing tax havens with no taxes at all, etc. But...
Cyprus is the only country where, with our non-dom status, we only need to stay for 60 days a year to be considered tax residents. Wow, and on the remaining days, we can follow our plan to explore the world—awesome!
In the other countries, that would have meant 183 days of mandatory attendance, which would have severely hampered us – the story of the gilded cage?
Of course, we see the disadvantages at first glance, and more will surely follow: building design, changes in lifestyle – we'll certainly have to get used to Sigà, Sigà, a rigid banking system like ours 30 years ago, no sidewalks or bike paths, Amazon only accessible via roundabout routes, anyone can easily get a gun and shoot around here…
I think the list could go on endlessly, which we might do in a separate blog post sometime. I also believe that such a massive "negative list" could be compiled for every country in the world. For us, what's important is that we have our base where we feel well treated and comfortable. That's it!

Feel free to check out our other posts about Cyprus as well.
